नई दिल्ली/फरीदाबाद, 23 मार्च: अक्सर देखने में आता है कि देश में कई बच्चे अक्सर सार्वजनिक स्कूलों और समुदायों में सुरक्षित पानी, पर्याप्त स्वच्छता की सुविधाओं का उपयोग नहीं करते हैं। रोटरी को विश्वास है कि रोटरी इंडिया वॉश इन स्कूल्स के माध्यम से स्कूलों में स्वच्छ जल, बेहतर स्वच्छता, शिक्षक प्रशिक्षण, स्वच्छता, शिक्षा जैसे अवसरों का एक चक्र बनाकर बच्चों के स्वास्थ्य और शिक्षा में सुधार किया जा सकता है। रोटरी इंडिया वॉश इन स्कूल्स कार्यक्रम रोटरी इसलिए चला रहा है क्योंकि इससे स्कूलों में उपस्थिति बढ़ेगी, बेहतर शैक्षणिक प्रदर्शन होगा। रोटरी इंटरनेशनल ने इस रोटरी वर्ष 2016-17 के दौरान पूरे भारतवर्ष में 20 हजार से अधिक सरकारी स्कूलों में रोटरी इंडिया वॉश इन स्कूल्स कार्यक्रम को लागू करने का संकल्प एवं प्रतिबद्धता व्यक्त की है। इसी के मद्देनजर 22 मार्च को मनाए गए विश्व जल दिवस पर इस अभियान पर केन्द्रित कई कार्यक्रम भी देश भर में आयोजित किए गए जोकि आगे भी निरन्तर जारी रहेंगे।
रोटरी इंडिया वॉश इन स्कूल्स प्रोग्राम के चेयरमैन एवं रोटरी इंडिया फाउंडेशन के ट्रस्टी सुशील गुप्ता का कहना है कि 30 जून, 2016 से शुरू होकर 30 जून 2017 को समाप्त होने वाले रोटरी वर्ष में देश के 20 हजार से अधिक सरकारी स्कूलों में रोटरी इंडिया वॉश इन स्कूल्स को लागू करने का लक्ष्य पूर्ण कर लिया जायेगा। रोटरी दिल्ली क्षेत्र के 200 से अधिक स्कूलों में उक्त प्रकल्प लागू किया जा रहा है। ध्यान रहे कि करीब 1.60 लाख बच्चों को प्रभावित करने वाले इस कार्यक्रम में दिल्ली के रोटरी एजूकेशन फाउंडेशन से वित्तीय सहायता उपलब्ध कराई गई है एवं इसमें रोटरी फाउंडेशन के ट्रस्टी सुशील गुप्ता के प्रयासों की अहम् भूमिका रही।
रोटरी इंडिया वॉश इन स्कूल्स के सचिव पीडीजी रमेश अग्रवाल ने बताया कि विगत एक वर्ष में रोटरी ने शिक्षा विभागों एवं जिला स्तर के अधिकारियों के सहयोग से 9000 स्कूलों में साफ-पानी और स्वच्छता सुविधाओं को स्थापित करने में मदद की है। रोटरी ने हाल में ही भारत सरकार के राष्ट्रीय स्वच्छ गंगा मिशन के साथ सहमति ज्ञापन पर भी हस्ताक्षर किये हैं। इसके अंतर्गत रोटरी इंडिया विभिन्न प्रदेशों में गंगा के किनारे स्थित 500 से ज्यादा सरकारी स्कूलों में स्वच्छ विद्यालय कार्यक्रम के अलावा गंगा की स्वच्छता के लिए अभियान भी चलाएगी। रोटरी का यह कार्यक्रम बिहार, झारखंड, उत्तर प्रदेश, उत्तराखण्ड तथा पश्चिम बंगाल में चलाया जाएगा।
रोटरी इंडिया वॉश इन स्कूल्स के सचिव पीडीजी रमेश अग्रवाल का कहना है कि उक्त अभियान की एक प्रमुख विशेषता यह सुनिश्चित करना है कि देश के सरकारी स्कूलों में कामकाज और अच्छी तरह से साफ पानी एवं स्वच्छता की सुविधा उपलब्ध हो सके। स्कूलों में स्वच्छता के तरीकों और साफ पानी की उपलब्धता के साथ इन सुविधाओं के सामुदायिक स्वामित्व को बढ़ावा देने के पाठ्यक्रम व शिक्षण सुविधाओं में सुधार भी किया जा रहा है। उक्त अभियान वॉश इन स्कूल्स टार्गेट चैलेंज प्रकल्प का हिस्सा है जो भारत सहित विश्व के पांच देशों में अमल में लाया गया है। रोटरी इस अभियान में यूनिसेफ के साथ वैश्विक एवं स्थानीय स्तर पर साझेदार व सहयोगी है।

New Delhi (Metro Plus): World Water Day is an annual event celebrated on March 22. The day focuses attention on the importance of fresh water and advocates for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. World Water Day is also used to highlight required improvements for access to WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene) in Schools facilities in developing countries.
Every year, UN-Water proposes the annual theme and coordinates the global campaign alongside one or more members on behalf of UN-Water with the support of other members, program, partners and relevant stakeholders. Additionally, a number of non-governmental organizations such as Rotary, promoting clean water and sustainable aquatic habitats, use World Water Day as a time to focus attention on critical current issues. Events such as theatrical and musical celebrations, educational events, and campaigns to create awareness for access to clean and affordable water are held worldwide on World Water Day, or on convenient dates close to March.
We all understand that water is the essential building block of life. But it is more than just essential to quench thirst or protect health; water is vital for creating jobs and supporting economic, social, and human development. Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home, spending countless hours queuing or trekking to distant sources, and coping with the health impacts of using contaminated water.
2017 Theme: Why Wastewater?
This year the theme for the World Water Day is: Why Wastewater? to focus on wastewater and ways to reduce and reuse as over 80% of all the wastewater from our homes, cities, industry and agriculture flows back to nature polluting the environment and losing valuable nutrients and other recoverable materials. There is a need to improve the collection and treatment of wastewater and safely reuse it. At the same time, we need to reduce the quantity and pollution load of wastewater we produce, to help protect the environment and our water resources.
Globally, over 80% of the wastewater generated by society flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused. Today over 1.8 billion people use a source of drinking water contaminated with faeces, putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio. Unsafe water, poor sanitation and hygiene cause around 842,000 deaths each year. (WHO/UNICEF 2014/WHO 2014)
